What ticks our boxes, gets our hearts racing, makes us OBSESS over getting back to that chapter…

I’ve put together this little self-analysis worksheet so that readers can read better in 2026. Ready?

It’s not a test, but there is a worksheet. (Goes and checks…) (Yes, I’ve saved them all)

If you want to check out ALL of my previous planner posts, you can click here

More specifics:

My 2019 Planners as Planned

A Peek at my 2020 Planner Lineup

My 2021 Hobonichi

My 2021 Planner System

The Joy of 2022 Planning

Hobonichi Weeks v. Cousin

2024! (What are they called? I don’t know)

For the past few years, I’ve tried using these pages as a habit tracker. Specifically, I had three habits that I tried to grow last year. I simplified my methods, tried to #focus, experimented with different systems of moving habits to my daily pages…. all sorts of things that I’m not doing a great job of explaining. And when I set up this year’s hobonichi, I realized if insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results… well. I needed to switch it up.

So I thought about what has worked for me in the past, and decided to just use these as a monthly goal collection area. Each month, I’ll set goals for myself, write them here and cross them off when I’m done.

What hasn’t changed? My book tracker page, ^^ up there. It’s perfect!

And I’m still using this for tracking my tv/ movie watching. I started doing this just to see how my input affected my writing but really, it’s handy to go back and see what I’ve watched when someone at a party asks, “have y’all watched anything good recently?” This is 2025. There’s a LOT of content to keep track of.

Last year I used two different pages to track my decluttering progress and my self-care activities. (After going through breast cancer, self-care hits differently for me. It’s not that I have self-care goals, exactly, but when I do something nice for myself/ my body, having a page where I can write it down, helps me remember that I can’t forsake being kind to myself.)

I have monthly and weekly decluttering tasks, so this is where I will record them. Again, it’s not like anyone is asking me at a dinner party, “have you done any good decluttering lately?” but it’s to keep me accountable. Also, this a good excuse to use these excellent stickers.

Speaking of stickers, here are the ones I chose for the cover of my Hobonichi cousin planner. I am feeling a demure champagne - fire - sword - sparkle vibe this year.

I have some other things I’m going to talk about in my January newsletter, so make sure you’re signed up for it, so you see all my 2025 planning tools and tricks! Sign up here.

And my peek into the 2021 Hobonichi here and HERE

So… 2023 was the year that I tried the Hobonichi Weeks!

I ordered my Cousin in late 2022, per usual, but got an itch to switch in the spring.

I had originally switched from my Medium ring planner to the Hobonichi Cousin years ago because I was in a very busy phase of life. The kids were in a million activities, and with all the practices, orthodontist appointments, etc., I needed SPACE to write.

This Spring, I realized that I was going down a kid and that maybe, just maybe I could go into a smaller planner. One that could fit in a purse! Oh, the luxury.

So for my birthday, I bought myself an April start Hobonichi Weeks, a preloved Louis Vuitton cover and monthly tabs. I moved into it nearly right away and it took some time to figure out how to plan.

You see, the Hobonichi Cousin has a horizontal weekly layout and the Weeks is a vertical weekly layout. This takes some adjusting for someone like me.

But it still had my beloved Hobonichi paper, the graph design, the Japanese words. All in all, it was a good experiment.

Yeah.

You caught that, right? My time with the Weeks was fun, but I’m headed back to the Cousin for 2024.

Why?

See the easily wrinkled pages - from being thrown in a bag. I’m a mess.

I’ll get into some of my pros and cons but I won’t do a full review of what’s in the Weeks or Cousin. There are plenty of YouTube videos about the Weeks and I’ve reviewed the Cousin extensively at the links above.

FOR ME…

I just never fully settled into the Weeks. The note pages in the back were somewhat helpful in meetings and for phone calls and such, but I still found myself using my 2023 Cousin for morning pages/ journaling because the Weeks pages were too narrow for me to journal in.

Yes, I could throw it in most of my handbags, but that would result in some wrinkled pages, no matter how I secured the cover. I didn’t want to invest in another cover for the Weeks, especially when I have a medium ring planner that I could use if I needed a secured cover.

And I guess in the end, I just prefer the room in the Cousin. Even if I have fewer soccer practices and orthodontist appointments to keep track of, I feel more comfortable with a little more room to play in.

So I’m going back - full time - to the Hobonichi Cousin in 2024. It’s not you, Hobonichi. It’s me.

Stay tuned for my posts on how I’m going to use my planners in 2024 by subscribing to my Women With Books Substack.

For ALLLLLLL my planner related blog posts, click HERE

And check out my books - made possible by Hobonichi-assisted planning - HERE.

I don’t know if other people felt the same as me because I’m not sure anyone really has the language to discuss this all yet.

But the beautiful thing about believing in science was I couldn’t argue with a calendar. Yes, the sun had risen and set 365 times and the earth had traveled around that distant star and… here we were. A year gone. A year up to bat.

So I did what I always do. I ordered a planner, I thought about what I wanted to do - with planning, with life… (cue laughter from the heavens).

Because a lot of people (honestly, I’m not just saying that), like to look at planner stuff, I’m putting up some of my choices this year, but mostly, I’m sticking with my systems from the past few years and if you’d like more info on all that, here you go:

My 2019 Planners as Planned

A Peek at my 2020 Planner Lineup

My 2021 Hobonichi

My 2021 Planner System

ALL THE PLANNER RELATED STUFF I’VE EVER PUT ON MY BLOG

There. You happy?

Since this year was a weird one, I didn’t do a lot of pre-planning but on New Year’s Day, I locked myself up in our little office, put my headphones on (the rest of the family was watching The Matrix, parts 1-5) and got to work. It took a while. There was a folding table. Lots of post-its, pens, and stickers. See:

Eventually, I got my mind right. I transferred all calendars, appointments, etc. into the new Hobonichi. Set up a few systems and edited some old ones. As I have the past few years, I used the extra December month page and turned it into a monthly kanban board for recurring monthly goals and tasks:

I also spent an inordinate amount of time selecting the stickers that will go on the outside of my hobonichi. This is a serious decision!

Stickers for 2021 vs. Stickers for 2022. Love them all so much.

The Deep Thought I kept having this year is.. how much longer is this going to be useful to me?

Related questions: Am I completely in denial about “planning” 2022?

Is there another word that would suit this process better? Because “planning” seems like a stupid word to use in these times.

To tell the truth, I switched to this system when my life was very different. I needed MORE room. I needed BIG. I needed COMPREHENSIVE. But life has changed. Life is changing. In a few years, I won’t be tracking all these practices, orthodontic appointments, school holidays, on top of my own dates.

I’m intellecting on what that’s going to look like. How will I know when it’s time to change?

I guess the same way I knew I had to go bigger. I’ll know when it’s time to go smaller. Or more streamlined. Or something.

But regardless of the SIZE of the planner, I think I’ll always appreciate the intention that I bring to this process. This is my creation. This is how I express what I want from the next twelve months, the next 365 days of the sun setting and the moon rising. I want it to work LIKE THIS. And if it doesn’t, well. That will be disappointing.

But, you know. I can deal.

With all that said, my word of the year should surprise no one.

Yes, it’s the same word I chose in 2021 (read more about that here.)

I wasn’t done with the word yet. It still felt vital to me. Alive. Hopeful. Active.

All things that I need.

So I hope that you found this interesting. Or helpful. I hope that you are planning something awesome this year.

Because here’s what I’ve learned for sure. We might be waiting for life to get better. But life isn’t waiting on us. Children are growing, flowers are growing and tides turn whether or not we’re ready to go outside or not.

I’m tired of waiting.

I want fun times. I want adventures. I want laughing with my girls.

If you’re not already in the Inner Circle, you may be interested in signing up here. I send out the Secret Posts on the last Friday of every month and maybe there will be more exclusive content this year… After all, my word is CREATE. So who knows what I’ll do?

Because I’m going to refer back to all of those.

On New Year’s Day I had a marathon planner session. First I had to assemble alllll my new washi I bought before the holidays to make some free shipping limits. lol

I collected all the stickers and post-its and notepads so I could fully see what I had to work with and what was going to work in 2021.

I put together a little combo vision board/ kanban board. I tried the full on Sarra Cannon kanban board method in years past (discussed here) but in 2021 that type of kanban didn’t feel right to me.

First of all, after taking a Better Faster course this fall, I decided to focus on my goal setting on a shorter time period than a quarter. I’m adopting a monthly schedule for goals and when I select those, I’m simply going to write them on my vision-kanban board (above) so I can see them out in front of me and then check them off when I complete those tasks.

I re-ordered the Sessa Vee inserts for my Louis Vuitton MM agenda and this will be my social media/ newsletter planner. Above, you’ll see that I’ve highlighted the days my Inner Circle Newsletter will be sent out. (I may have a few extra notebooks floating around. I am a writer after all. I have to scribble stuff down!) A lot has been carried forward from last year and I feel good about that because that means I know what works for me and that it did work for me - even in the weirdest, least-planner-y year ever.. The tweaks and changes I’ve made are ways that I can improve upon the system and that’s kind of the goal for my year, I guess. I’ll be blogging soon about my word of the year and how that’s impacting all this ^^^ planning.

If you’re into planners and love to sneak more peeks, make sure you follow me on Instagram because one of my New Year’s resolutions is to share more planner pics there. I love that community and it’s a beautiful little spot in a distracting, often disturbing real world.

Some links on this page may be affiliate links, which means I could receive a few coins for posting them. As always, thank you for your support and encouragement!

target="_blank" rel="noopener">my next book features a Royal princess, a sexy spy and kissing. And you might also know that when I started to write it, I didn't originally set out to write a so-called "royal" book (See: How I got the Idea.)<figure data-trix-attachment='{"contentType":"image","height":500,"url":"https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/592f2b01a5790abb6b0801bb/1533144571543-TBO9P364RBKTG9TNFSE5/TRR+cover+reveal.png","width":500}' I’ve helpfully included the link to book 1 in each series. You’re very welcome.

The Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen

Amazon || Apple Books

This is one of the few that I have NOT read all the books in the series, but I still feel confident recommending it. I’m savoring each of the adventures of Lady Georgianna, 34th in line to the throne.

Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich

Amazon || Apple Books

This is pretty much the book that inspired a thousand authors to try to be half as funny and half as engaging as the mishaps of a bounty hunter in Trenton, NJ.

Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris

Amazon || Apple Books

This is the series that got me back to reading after I had my youngest child. I read the first eight of these books in a week, I think. They were so addictive and original and, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed the books far more than the show. Which was good, too! For reasons.

Below Stairs Mysteries by Jennifer Ashley

Amazon || Apple Books

Now this series is still ongoing, but I’ve recommended it to so many people (and on this blog!). I just love the heroine and all the Downton Abbey-esque details of her Below Stairs life.

Lady Julia Grey Mysteries by Deanna Raybourn

Amazon || Apple Books

Now Ms. Raybourn has two wonderful historical mystery series out, this one and her Veronica Speedwell series and I did hesitate about which one to recommend. After all, the Lady Julia Grey series has concluded and Veronica Speedwell is still continuing, to the best of my knowledge. In the end, I picked Lady Julia Grey because I’ve actually re-read them (is that weird? Even though I’ve already read the resolution?) and because if you start with Julia, you can keep going all the way through Veronica.

And of course, I have to recommend my own fun, fabulous, feminine mystery series. If you like Sookie Stackhouse and Stephanie Plum all rolled up in a Elle Woods package, check out Margot Blythe.

Amazon || Apple Books

What are your favorite mystery series? I know there are so many more that I need to dive into… like JD Robb. I KNOW I KNOW. But the sheer number of books in the series just intimidates me. I fear I won’t be able to read anything else and then a year will go by and I’ll come out of my cave not knowing what has happened in the world.

So. Any recommendations for me? ;-)

Basically, it’s what readers of a certain type of genre or sub-genre expect when they approach that sort of book.

A corollary to a reader wheel is an author wheel – that is, what an author brings to every book. This might also be known as an author’s “core story.” Ideally, an author can eventually make a promise to a reader – that X, Y and Z will be found in every book written by that author. (I can hear some writers grumbling or protesting now, but that’s a debate for another time… with alcohol involved.)

Because she’s on top of things like this, Roni Loren wrote a blog post outlining what she likes reading and the aspects she hopes is also in her books here.

Of course that got me thinking about what I like to read the most and sure enough, I realized that it’s also the same things that I *hope* are in my books.

1. “Voice” / humor / banter.

Voice is that indefinable quality that writers and readers can recognize in an instant – a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book *sounds* different from a Sarah MacLean book which *sounds* different from an Ilona Andrews book. Once I find an author with a voice that I click with, I’m basically their servant for life.

For me, a good author “voice” is almost synonymous with an inherent humor, but it doesn’t have to be. I also think snappy banter/ dialogue is very entwined with an appealing voice but again, that’s probably my preference.

And I’ve been told my books are funny (even when I’m trying to be serious!) and have *my* voice (even when I’m trying to sound different!) so if you like *my* voice then maybe you’ll like the books I love and recommend, too!

2. Romance/ sexual tension/ romantic interest

I don’t always read romance, but I do always like to read *something* with a romantic interest or some sexual tension. It just makes the whole thing much more satisfying (that’s what she said.)

Similarly, I don’t really write straight up romance but even if I write a mystery novel, you know there’s going to be a hot cop. Or a hot private investigator. Or a hot… accountant. That’s my solemn vow as an author.

3. Mystery/ magic/ quest/ twist

I think this is the wheel where genres start getting blurred around here. I will read romance… but my favorite-est romances are those where there’s a twist or some sub-plot with a mystery to solve. I love a vaguely paranormal aspect to plots, too, or just straight up paranormal/ time-travel, etc.

You see this in my books because I love putting in a psychic or a tarot card in the middle of a royal adventure. I really adore writing mysteries and I think I keep things fairly twisty in any of my stories. (A twist even popped up in my stories The Island Christmas Spirit and The Matchmaking Christmas Spirit – where I was trying to write a straight-forward, simple, trope-y holiday romances!)

4. Female focused.

I prefer reading about the female experience, written by female authors, about feminist topics. I really have to have A LOT of recommendations to get me to any book that’s about a dude written by a dude. I know a lot of people could call that reverse sexism but… I don’t know. I don’t think it’s a bad thing. As I taught my kids, “don’t yuck someone else’s yum.”

And as I mentioned recently in my blog post about Queens and the Patriarchy, exploring female power and friendships is a theme that keeps popping up in my books – so I guess my subconscious has something to say about it!

5. Good writing!

This is sooooo subjective. It’s a lot like pornography. You know it when you see it. And everyone’s opinion is different – and valid! What clicks for one person might not click for another and the books I recommend might not click for you. But I promise that ANY book I recommend will be edited, contain good grammar, spelling, etc. And my books? I don’t give my AGENT a manuscript with mistakes, I definitely wouldn’t sell one to a reader!

So those are my wheels. If they sound like yours, then you should follow my blog or sign up for my newsletters for lots of awesome book recommendations. Also, I have books for sale, if you want to check them out, because most of them are like ^^^^.

But if you like your books with paragraphs of detailed description, tons of angst, loads and loads of sexy times, or lots of dudes and their dude-ish stories, my recommendations might not be for you. Which is cool. Because out of all the promises I make as an author, I promise to never yuck your yum.

*originally posted on Lindsayemory.com*

Where do readers find books?

If you like to read, there’s a good chance that you’ve looked around and asked yourself, “where do other readers find good books?” Or more importantly, “where do other readers find good books on sale?”

With the hibernation of the American brick and mortar bookstore, it can be hard to discover new authors and their new releases. I mean, you can’t just wander into Waldenbooks or Borders (or in some cases a convenient Barnes and Noble) anymore. And the selections at Target and Wal-Mart are great but they don’t usually cover all genres. You’d be hard pressed to find the latest science fiction series at Target, for example. And if you wanted the first 6 books in a series? Yeah, no.

So you turn to the internet booksellers. And while Amazon might have every book ever written, that’s a little…. Overwhelming. And it may not solve your original problem.

So how do I find the perfect book to read?

1. Follow me! On both this blog and my podcast, WOMEN WITH BOOKS, I’m always giving recommendations and if I see those books on sale, I try to post them on my facebook page.

2. Goodreads - Probably the largest social media/ website that’s centered around books, it can still be tough to find exactly the book you want to read. There are lists, there are contests, there are groups and you can browse all of them. Anyone can post ‘the top 200 books about cats in Quebec” and that’s awesome to have that space but it can be hard for a reader who’s specifically looking for something.

My best advice? Follow the authors you already love. Start friending them and others who like the same books you do. You’ll see what other people are reading and loving. For instance, if you friend me on Goodreads, you’ll be able to easily see what I’ve read for my GR reading challenge this year.

Then sign up for the Goodreads newsletters for your preferred genre. They can still be incomplete, but you will start to see what’s coming out and what looks good and what’s on sale.

Also -Amazon now owns Goodreads. So you never know what cool functionality (or sales updates) you’ll see between the two sites in the future.

3. Bookbub - this is primarily still an e-mail newsletter that will notify you of sales on books in the genres that you select. But in the past year or so, Bookbub has added several new features that I really enjoy. You can follow your favorite authors and when they have a new release, Bookbub will e-mail you. Also, Bookbub will notify you if your favorite authors recommend books, and what they are. Interested? Sign up and try following me to see what happens to your TBR pile.

4. Amazon - the behemoth of online booksellers also offers some of the same features as Bookbub. For instance, you can follow authors (my profile here) and Amazon says you’ll get a notification of their new book releases. When THE ROYAL RUNAWAY went up on pre-order, a reader let me know that she learned about it from an Amazon e-mail - which is AWESOME. But I’ve heard other authors say that they’re not sure their readers are notified regularly. So if there’s an author that you absolutely can’t miss, best practice is probably to follow them at Goodreads, Bookbub and Amazon - a belt and suspenders approach, if you will.

The other recommendation I have at Amazon would be to sign up for their Kindle Daily Deals e-mail. These sales can often be exclusive to Amazon, which means that Bookbub might not feature them. You have to act fast though - when Amazon puts books on sale, it might be a quick flash and then the deal is gone.

So those are my best recommendations for finding awesome new books (on sale!) to read. I know it might sound like you have to sign up for everything, but I promise you, authors and booksellers are so excited to put the perfect book into a reader’s hands. I know nothing makes me happier.

Reserve your copy of THE ROYAL RUNAWAY at:

Amazon || BN.Com || Simon & Schuster || Apple Books ||Amazon UK || Kobo

You know what else makes me happy? When readers like you pre-order my latest book! Or add it to their Goodreads shelf! Or put it on their Amazon wishlist! All of these things help signal to my publisher and retailers that this is a book that people will love.

And it is. Don’t you trust my judgment yet?
